Elegant Wooden Bird Sculptures Honor the Graceful Movements of Winged Creatures

Posted on Art 169

Artist Rex Homan honors the elegance of our feathered friends through his extensive portfolio of sculptures. His carefully crafted pieces, which often feature the fusion of different woods, exhibit the graceful movements of birds—their expansive wing spans, stoic stances, and effortless dives. Each creature includes color-blocked timber with some painted elements highlighting their defining characteristics. This attention to detail showcases just how many incredible species of birds exist in our world.

Homan is based in New Zealand and has had a long career as a sculptor—his work first gained traction in the 1960s and 1970s. Since that time, he’s been influenced by the “culture of the Pacific” and displays this wide-ranging inspiration with a commitment to dramatic lines and diverse, yet equally stylized, forms.

Represented by the Spirit Wrestler Gallery in Vancouver, Homan has crafted an impressive collection of birds. See more of his nearly 200 works on their website.
