10 Diets That Turned Out to be Completely Wrong
It seems no one is satisfied with their bodies, especially if they have a problem being overweight. This has sparked a variety of diets and weight-loss methods, most of which are just not the right, or healthy, way to get the job done. Here we will discuss ten of the top incorrect methods of dieting used today.
1. The ‘Breatharianism’ Diet
This insane method of weight loss is based on the theory that human beings can live on sunlight and breezy weather alone, without any other form of nourishing sustenance. The fact as we all know it is that if you don’t eat you will lose weight, but you won’t live very long. The creator of this diet claimed to have not eaten or drank for years, and she was challenged on this point. She took the challenge, and became severely dehydrated after only a very short time. The challenge was discontinued, and the diet was called bunk.
2. The ‘Tongue Patch’
Here’s a good one. This diet consisted of placing a patch the size of a stamp directly on the tongue, and would supposedly help the user lose up to 30 pounds of excess weight a month. How did it ‘work’? It made eating so painful that the wearer actually couldn’t eat, which would of course aide in weight loss. It caused infections, severe pain, excessive drooling, and even had the potential to choke people to death.
3. The hCG Diet
HCG is a hormone the body produces during gestation, and it is what pregnancy tests detect. They have also made drugs by extracting hCG, but they had some pretty unpleasant side-effects. While it was touted as being a weight-loss aid, the fact is that it didn’t work unless dieters consumed only about 500 calories every day, which will result in drastic weight loss all by itself. The fact is, this was a bogus diet method that caused headaches, swelling, and mood swings.
4. Dieting with Cotton Balls
Really? This diet demanded that one soak cotton balls in fruit juice to make the easier to get down, then eat them. They offer no nutritional value, and they have great potential for getting stuck in our innards. The result of this includes gangrene, internal bleeding, and ulcers. The cotton blockage is referred to as ‘bezoar’, and having one inside of you will indeed curb your appetite. Heck, it will make you sick.
5. The Clen Diet
Clenbuterol, or ‘Clen’, is growth stimulant hormone which is often used to treat ailments of the lung in horses. The fact is, humans are not even provided with food that contains the chemical. But now all kinds of people are taking it to lose weight. Not only can it nausea, vomiting, and heart palpitations, it can poison you as well. You should definitely pass on this.
6. The Kimkins Diet Method
This insane weight-loss method was touted poorly in Women’s World magazine, which sparked its popularity. It demanded that one eat only 500 calories per day, supplementing with laxatives, which is a no-no on its own when it comes to weight loss. It resulted in a variety of health issues, including hair loss, fatigue, nausea, diarrhea, and even brain hemorrhage, in some cases.
7. Dieting with a Feeding Tube
This is also referred to as ‘ketogenic enternal nutrition’, and consists of receiving nourishment only through a feeding tube. It was developed by Dr. Oliver de Pietro, and consisted of the user toting a bag of fluids around which ‘fed’ them through a tube that went into their nose and dripped into their stomach. It causes exhaustion, bad breath, and even emotional problems.
8. Red Bull
This popular energy drink is said to aid in weight loss if you drink 14 cans of it per day. Now, the problem is that fourteen cans of Red Bull a day can easily result in stroke or heart attack, along with any minor weight loss, not to mention there is so much sugar in the drinks that diabetes problems are not unheard of. Don’t even consider this one.
9. Ear Stapling Diet
This diet is based on Chinese acupuncture, and consists of having small staples inserted into specific pressure points in the ear’s cartilage. The staples remain in the ear for a number of weeks to suppress the appetite. When done by non-professionals, as it often is, one can suffer infection or even get disfigured ears.
10. Corset Dieting
Corsets were a fashion accessory for a number of years which were extremely uncomfortable, to the point that many saw them as devices of torture. Using it to diet consists of wearing one for a couple of hours, and adding more and more time week by week until it is being worn for twelve hours every day. Not only do the ribs get smashed, but internal organs do as well, resulting in damage to the liver and kidneys, as well as oxygen deprivation.
